This photographic series was created during my artist residency at BPS22, a Contemporary Art Museum in Charleroi, Belgium, with the support of the Quebec Art Council. During an unusually sunny spring for a region more often known for its rain, I went out daily to explore and photograph my new surroundings, a vast and inspiring playground. Charleroi became both a place to live and a field of observation, where I paid attention to everyday moments, encounters, gestures and poetry.

Often referred to as the “Black Country” because of its mining history, the city revealed a very different reality—marked by warmth, openness, and a strong visual presence. The images gathered here reflect a personal and grounded approach to visual anthropology, shaped by time spent walking, observing, and biking. Like Sunflowers was developed over two months spent in Charleroi and its surroundings, guided by curiosity and a sustained attention to light, people, colors and architecture.
