The Grace That Remains brings together a photographic series of eight residents of a social housing complex in Montreal’s Saint-Michel neighbourhood.
As our time together unfolded, we followed the paths of childhood, memory and inner landscapes, touching on the joys and hardships that have shaped a life. As our conversations deepened, they revealed a shared impulse — to keep playing, laughing, connecting with others and with the living world, and to remain open to beauty and wonder.
Perhaps that is one of the quiet gifts of a life lived through many seasons: some impulses stay with us. The impulse to be curious. To play. To laugh. To connect. To marvel. This series is a joyful tribute to that enduring vitality — and to the grace that remains.
Thank you to Anne-Marie St-Louis, Micheline Gravel, Nadine Meloche and Geneviève Roberge; to La maison de la culture de Parc-Extension; to Carrefour populaire de Saint-Michel. I am also grateful to the Saint-Michel Library for its active participation in the project.
And finally, thank you to Dolores, Marcel, Sami, Vicky, Sherley, Ghislaine, Maria Cristina and Marie-José for their generosity, enthusiasm and joy.
May the impulse to play, to connect, to wonder — to be fully alive — remain.
